Catching Up on Reading!

This week I read three children’s books. The first two were re-reads of old favorites, The Story of Ferdinand  by Munro Leaf, and When Sophie Gets Angry – Really, Really Angry … by Molly Bang. The third was new to me, Hate That Cat by Sharon Creech – I loved them all.

Sophie is picture book for young children about a what happens when a little girl gets angry.  This is a fantastic book for children and parents to read together to begin those important discussions about emotions and what to do with them.  Ferdinand  is also a picture book, but longer and more difficult for a child to read on his or her own.  It’s a family favorite for us, and also a classic piece of children’s literature.

Sharon Creech is one of my favorite authors for upper elementary students.  Hate That Cat  is listed as a “companion book” to Love That Dog.  I think you if you haven’t read Love That Dog first, you should.  Both books are written in the same format – a journal-like series of poems between Jack and his teacher, Miss Stretchberry.  The reader never sees what Miss Stretchberry writes back and needs to piece together the clues from Jack’s next entry.  It’s fantastic and highly recommended by me!

Happy 4th of July and enjoy your reading!
